Lifecycle Projects

Honoring trees specific to a build site, aligning heritage and future designs

The acoustic album of your favorite rock group, Lifecycle Projects are the most authentic expression
of the mission of Angel City Lumber. Working with builders and developers directly, we plan the removal of standing trees from a site and look ahead to how best to utilize the resulting lumber. Most often the wood is reinvested into new structures going up on the site. We’ve also done projects where the wood brings special meaning to products, such as the Blue Gum Eucalyptus from the home of
Charles and Ray Eames. Working with the Eames Foundation, the carefully milled and cured wood
was crafted into products designed by Eames during their lifetime.

Staying with the theme of being local to Southern California in our practice, Angel City Lumber collaborated with the LA County Museum of Art to fell trees on the site of the expansion of the museum towards the adjacent Tarpits. Trees taken from the site are truly unique, in that what would be expected to be a blonde softwood, from California Sycamore, is revealed to be a rich molasses color from the tar which seeped into the tree during its lifetime. This beautiful wood will go into special applications in the new expansion, and a story can be told to all who ask, “what is the beautiful wood?”

Lifecycle projects do not need to be as grand as these examples, and the meaning brought by this process is entirely personal to your vision. Please connect with us to discuss your timeline and the tree species available, and we would love to visit your site and discuss how our services can contribute to something both aesthetic and with meaning.
